Barnstable is roughly twenty miles northeast of East Falmouth, depending which village you mean, about half an hour on Route 28, or Route 6 to Exit 65 for the north side.
Barnstable is the largest municipality on the Cape by population and by land area, and it is not one place. Seven villages carry the name, Barnstable Village, West Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills and Osterville, with Cummaquid, Hyannis Port, West Hyannisport and Santuit counted alongside them. It is a town with a city form of government rather than a city, and the practical effect for us is that one set of town rules stretches across ten very different kinds of neighborhood.
The north side is the one people picture. Route 6A runs from West Barnstable through Barnstable Village to Cummaquid, along the edge of the Great Marsh, and everything north of Route 6 falls inside the Old King's Highway Regional Historic District. Houses there are old and the approval process for exterior work is real. South of Route 6 the character flips entirely: the Route 132 commercial strip, the density of downtown Hyannis, the beach neighborhoods behind Craigville, the estate lots at Osterville and Cotuit. How we reach Barnstable
Which route we take depends entirely on which Barnstable you mean. For Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Osterville and Centerville we run Route 28 east from the yard and turn off at the village road. For Barnstable Village, Cummaquid and West Barnstable we either stay on Route 28 and turn north onto Route 149 at Marstons Mills, or use Route 6 and come off at Exit 65 for Route 149 or Exit 68 for Route 132. Route 6A itself is the tricky stretch: narrow lanes, mature trees close to the shoulder, stone walls, and long gravel driveways that curve out of sight. West Barnstable still has genuinely rural runs with soft edges. Marstons Mills and Cotuit have sandy back lanes. We plan the approach before the truck leaves, because turning a loaded roll-off around on 6A is not an option.

What comes out of Barnstable properties
No other town we serve spans this much. Barnstable Village and West Barnstable hold 18th and 19th century houses with plaster, lath, brick chimneys and full-dimension framing, and a gut there fills a container by weight long before it fills it by volume. Cummaquid and the 6A corridor add antique farmhouses on deep lots. Centerville and Marstons Mills run mostly postwar and later, ranches and capes and colonials with drywall and asphalt shingle. Hyannis brings apartment buildings, commercial interiors and multi-family conversions. Osterville and Cotuit carry the estate work, cedar shingle and copper and slate and cabinetry, plus landscape debris in quantity. Permits, placement and access in Barnstable

Does the Old King's Highway district cover my Barnstable property?
If you are north of Route 6, in Barnstable Village, West Barnstable or Cummaquid, then most likely yes. The district covers the Route 6A corridor and is administered by an elected town committee, with a regional commission hearing appeals. It reviews exterior changes such as siding, roofing, windows and additions. It says nothing about dumpsters, but it can delay the start of the work, so line up the approval before you line up the container.
Which Route 6 exit do your trucks use?
It depends on the village. Exit 65 puts us onto Route 149, which is the road for West Barnstable, Marstons Mills and the Route 6A end of Barnstable Village. Exit 68 is Route 132, which serves Hyannis and the commercial district. For Cotuit, Osterville and Centerville we usually skip the highway altogether and run Route 28 east from East Falmouth, since it is a straighter line from our yard.
Do I need a Barnstable transfer station permit to rent a dumpster?
No. Barnstable's transfer station operates on a purchased permit system for residents hauling their own material, and it is funded entirely by user fees rather than tax revenue. A roll-off rental is a separate service. We haul the loaded container to a permitted disposal or recycling facility, and disposal is included in the flat rate up to the tonnage quoted, so no town permit or sticker is needed on your side.
How do I keep a dumpster off my septic system?
Find the leach field and the distribution box before delivery day, not after. A loaded roll-off can weigh several tons concentrated on a small footprint, and Title 5 leach fields are shallow and easy to crush. Many Barnstable lots have the field under the front lawn where a container would naturally sit. If you have your Title 5 plan, dig it out. If not, we will look at the lot with you and pick a spot on solid ground.
