Harwich is about 33 miles east of our East Falmouth yard, Route 6 to Exit 82 and south on Route 124, or Route 28 the whole way along the south shore.
Harwich is eight villages pretending to be one town, and each of them throws different debris at us. Harwich Port is compact, expensive and built right up to the road, with old summer houses being reworked into year-round homes. Harwich Center is the civic core. East Harwich is where most of the newer subdivision housing went in from the 1970s onward. West and South Harwich run along Route 28 with cottage colonies and small lots. North Harwich and Pleasant Lake are quieter, wooded and sandy, with a lot of old bog land at the edges.
That cranberry history is not decoration. Harwich has a real claim as the birthplace of the commercial cranberry industry, with the first operation opened here in 1846, and the settlement pattern still follows the bogs and the Herring River. How we reach Harwich
Coming from the yard we usually take Route 6 to Exit 82 and drop south on Route 124 into Harwich Center, or carry on to Exit 85 and use Route 137 for the East Harwich side. Route 28 along the south shore is the direct line to Harwich Port, West Harwich and South Harwich, and from late June through Labor Day it is a parking lot from the Dennis line east, made worse by ferry traffic at Saquatucket. Route 39 handles the East Harwich crossing. The residential lanes off all of these are short, sandy and often shell-surfaced, and the old bog edges hold water. Harwich reads like a timeline. The oldest layer is the cranberry-era working town: modest Capes, half-Capes and farmhouses near the bogs and the Herring River, plaster interiors, small rooms, low ceilings and a century of patched additions. Permits, placement and access in Harwich
Harwich adopted an eighteen-month demolition delay bylaw in spring 2025, which can apply when a qualifying older building is slated to come down, so build that review time into your schedule if a teardown is on the table. My Harwich Port driveway is shell and barely two cars long. Can you still deliver?
Often yes, but it depends on the approach more than the length. We need room to back straight in and roughly 23 feet of overhead clearance to lift the box off the rails. Crushed shell scars easily, so we set plywood under the wheels and rails as standard. If the driveway genuinely will not take it, the alternative is a street placement, which means clearing it with the town first. Describe it on the phone and we will be straight with you.
What size do I need for a roof tear-off in Harwich?
A common answer here is a 15 yard for a single-layer strip on an average ranch, and a 20 for a bigger footprint or a second layer. Old Harwich roofs frequently have asphalt over asphalt over cedar shakes, which roughly doubles the weight per square. Yes. East Harwich is straightforward for us off Exit 85 and Route 137, and off-season we can often be there next day. In July and August, Route 28 and the ferry traffic at Saquatucket make afternoon deliveries unpredictable, so we will offer you a morning window instead. Winter is genuinely the best time to run a big project out here, and the schedule is far more open.
