Volume fills up first on most cleanouts. Weight is what surprises people. A container packed with couches and cardboard may never reach its included tonnage, while the same box half-filled with plaster will blow straight past it.

Old Cape houses are the reason. The truck needs roughly sixty feet of straight-line approach, about ten to twelve feet of width, and clear overhead space — low limbs, service drops, and porch roofs are the usual blockers. Working Around the Cape's Seasonal Calendar

Residential Dumpster Rental — the Cape Cod specifics

Two features of Cape housing stock change how a homeowner should plan a container. The first is septic. Outside sewered areas of Hyannis and a few village centers, homes run on-site systems governed by the state's Title 5 septic regulations, and tanks and leach fields commonly sit under the very side yard people want the box on. Flag yours before delivery day. The second is age. A 1750s full Cape in Sandwich or a 1960s cottage in Dennis both hide materials — plaster keys, horsehair, old vinyl flooring — that weigh more or sort differently than a modern build.

Massachusetts also keeps a real list of materials that cannot be landfilled, published as the MassDEP waste disposal bans. Will a roll-off dumpster damage my crushed shell or pea stone driveway?

Any loaded container concentrates weight through four steel rails, so some settling into loose stone or shell is normal. The fix is simple: we lay plywood or timber cribbing under the rails at delivery, free, if you ask. That spreads the load and keeps the rails from digging trenches. On new asphalt laid within the past year, tell us — hot summer pavement is soft and we would rather find a firmer spot in the yard or at the end of the drive.

Do I need a permit to put a dumpster in my own driveway on Cape Cod?

Not always, but do not assume you are clear. Falmouth requires a fire-prevention permit for any container over 6 cubic yards, even on your own driveway, with a ten-foot setback from the building. Other towns mainly regulate containers placed on a public street, sidewalk or right-of-way, handled through DPW, police or the fire department with separate forms and fees. How long can I keep the dumpster?

The standard rental period runs about a week, which covers most homeowner projects comfortably. Extensions are available at a daily rate, and off-season they are rarely a problem. In July and August, containers get turned faster because demand is high, so if you know a project will drag past the window, say so up front and we will plan around it rather than surprising you with an extension charge.

What happens if I go over the included weight?

Overages are billed per ton at the disposal facility's scale rate, and you get to see the ticket. Nothing is estimated or padded. If a load looks like it will run heavy — plaster, brick, tile, wet carpet — we would rather steer you toward a smaller box with a higher tonnage allowance or a dedicated heavy debris container up front. That conversation costs nothing and usually saves money.

Can you deliver if I'm not on the Cape yet, or off-island for the season?

Yes, and it is common with seasonal homeowners. As long as the drop spot is clearly described, the approach is clear of cars and boats, and any gate code is passed along, no one needs to be home. We text or call when the box is set. Many second-home owners have a caretaker or contractor meet the truck the first time, then handle later drops remotely.
