Roll-off dumpster rental in Provincetown

Provincetown is roughly 65 miles by road from our East Falmouth yard, about an hour and forty-five minutes each way, Route 6 to its eastern end, then down onto Bradford Street, which is Route 6A through town.

Let us be straight about the distance. Provincetown is roughly 64 miles from our East Falmouth yard and the trip runs close to an hour and forty-five minutes each way in good conditions, longer on a summer Saturday. Anyone who tells you they will swing by this afternoon is either lying or about to disappoint you. What we offer instead is a committed window on a planned run, and we hit it.

The other thing to be straight about is the streets. Commercial Street was laid out at about twenty-two feet wide and it has not grown, it runs one-way westbound through the busiest part of town, and a great many West End and East End houses have no driveway at all. Access is often through an alley, a shared way, or a gap between two buildings you could not fit a car through. Add pedestrians shoulder to shoulder from May to October, and delivery becomes a genuine planning exercise. Nate has been working out placements in this town since 2011, usually early on a weekday morning, sometimes with the town involved. Call before you finalize your project dates and we will tell you what is possible.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Provincetown

Knowing a town properly is the difference between a container that fits and a truck that has to turn around.

  • Pilgrim Monument — The granite tower on High Pole Hill above town, and the best fixed reference point on the whole Outer Cape.
  • MacMillan Pier — The ferry and fishing pier at the foot of Standish Street, and the busiest vehicle pinch point in town.
  • Provincetown Town Hall — On Commercial Street in the center, where questions about street use and placement ultimately get answered.
  • Provincetown Art Association and Museum — PAAM in the East End on Commercial Street, in the densest stretch of gallery-and-house frontage.
  • Herring Cove Beach — At the western end of Province Lands Road, on National Park Service land beyond the town's built-up area.
  • Race Point Light — Out on the Province Lands dunes, reachable only by over-sand permit routes, not by ordinary vehicle.

How we reach Provincetown

Route 6 ends here, and that is the whole story of getting in. From the Truro line the highway runs to its eastern terminus and traffic funnels onto Bradford Street, signed as Route 6A, which is the practical spine for anything on wheels. Commercial Street runs parallel and closer to the harbor, roughly twenty-two feet wide, one-way westbound, and packed with pedestrians all season. Shank Painter Road and Conwell Street connect the two. In July and August the whole grid is effectively saturated from mid-morning to late evening. We deliver Provincetown early, usually first thing, and we plan the exact placement before the truck leaves East Falmouth because there is nowhere to sit and think about it once we arrive.

What comes out of Provincetown properties

Around 73 percent of Provincetown's land is National Park Service property, which means the entire town is compressed onto a narrow strip along the harbor. The result is the densest building stock on Cape Cod: nineteenth century half-Capes, Greek Revivals and full-size captains' houses standing shoulder to shoulder on lots measured in feet, with almost no setbacks, shared party walls in places, and virtually no off-street parking in the West End. Guesthouses and condominium conversions are everywhere, which means renovation work is frequently unit by unit rather than whole-house. Debris is old and heavy, plaster over lath, layered cedar and asphalt roofing, cast iron, but it has to come out through a front door onto a public sidewalk. The container almost never sits where the work is happening, so we plan the carry distance as carefully as the box size.

Permits, placement and access in Provincetown

Provincetown is the one town on our route where street placement is the normal case rather than the exception, because so many properties have no driveway. That makes advance clearance essential. Occupying any part of a public street, sidewalk or municipal parking space with a container is a matter for the town, and Public Works and the Building Department are the offices that decide it. Summer rules and seasonal restrictions are tighter than off-season. Provincetown also carries a six-month demolition delay bylaw dating to 1998. Start with the Town of Provincetown, get the answer in writing, and then call us to schedule around it.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Provincetown

From first call to an empty driveway again, it runs like this.

  1. 1

Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask what you are clearing, where the box needs to sit and when you need it, and whether the property is on septic. No forms, no waiting on an email.

  2. 2

We size it and quote it flat

The placement question in Provincetown is nearly always the surface: packed sand, and whether the septic runs under it.

  3. 3

Delivered on boards, where you want it

The container comes off the truck onto boards, level, in the spot you marked. Low limbs are the usual obstacle here, so tell us about them in advance.

  4. 4

    Load at your own pace

Keep it level with the top rail and keep the banned items out. Need a swap mid-job or an early pickup? One call and we are on it.

  5. 5

We haul it and sort it right

Sorting happens at our end, but what you do on site decides the price. Anything on the state ban list that rides along in a mixed load gets pulled and billed.

Local answers

Dumpster rental in Provincetown — common questions

I have no driveway. Where does the container go?

Somewhere agreed in advance, and usually on the street. That means clearing it with the town before we schedule, because a container occupying a public way or a parking space is the town's decision, not ours. Other options we have used successfully are a guesthouse's off-street lot, a neighbor's yard with written permission, or a shorter rental with a fast turnaround so the box is not sitting in the way for a week. Call early and we will work through it.

Can you put a container on Commercial Street?

Very rarely, and never on assumption. Commercial Street was laid out around twenty-two feet wide, runs one-way westbound and carries constant pedestrian traffic, so a container there blocks the street outright. In practice we look for a Bradford Street placement, an alley or a lot, and plan a longer carry. If Commercial Street truly is the only option, it needs the town's approval and an off-season or very early morning slot.

How does the distance affect my rental?

Mostly it affects flexibility rather than price. We quote a flat rate that includes delivery, the rental period, pickup and disposal to the stated tonnage, and Provincetown is priced accordingly rather than surprising you later. What changes is scheduling. At 64 miles out we run planned trips, so same-day service is not realistic here and swaps need a day or two of notice. Tell us your dates early and you will not notice the difference.

What about the National Seashore and the Province Lands?

Roughly three quarters of the town's land is National Park Service property, including the Province Lands, Herring Cove and Race Point. Those roads and dune routes are federal and are not places for a loaded roll-off truck. In practice, virtually all Provincetown work happens within the built-up strip along the harbor, so the Seashore rarely affects the job itself. If your access does cross park land, say so when you call and we will confirm the route first.
