Cotuit is roughly ten miles northeast of the yard, the first Barnstable village you reach, about fifteen minutes east on Route 28.
Cotuit occupies a peninsula between the Santuit River and Nantucket Sound, and it has stayed quieter than almost anywhere else along the south shore. The Cotuit Oyster Company has worked the bay since 1857 and carries what is described as the oldest oyster brand name in the United States. The Kettleers have won more Cape Cod Baseball League titles than any other club, and on a July evening a good share of the village is at Lowell Park watching them. Lots tend to be wooded, driveways tend to be crushed shell or sand, and the lanes running down toward the water are narrow enough that the approach decides the container size rather than the project does.

How we reach Cotuit
Cotuit is the first Barnstable village you meet heading east, and Route 28 brings us almost to the door. Route 130 also begins here, running north from Route 28 at Santuit toward Mashpee and Sandwich, which is useful when we combine a Cotuit drop with a Sandwich pickup on one trip. Inside the village the roads narrow quickly. Main Street, Old Post Road, School Street and the lanes running down to Cotuit Bay are tree-lined with low limbs, soft edges and very little shoulder, and several of them are private ways maintained by the neighbors rather than the town. We check the approach before committing to a 20-yard box, and toward the water end of the village a 10-yard container placed twice beats a large one placed once.

Cotuit houses lean older and smaller than those of its neighbors. Main Street and the village center hold 19th-century capes and Greek Revival houses with plaster interiors and full-dimension framing, and many have never been fully gutted, so a renovation turns up layers: plaster over lath, then paneling, then drywall over the top. Around the edges sit 1950s to 1970s summer cottages on wooded lots, cedar shingled and low-slung, most of them now lived in year-round. The bay-front lots carry larger shingle-style houses with cedar roofs and long decks. Usually, with the right container. The lanes below Main Street are tree-lined with low limbs and soft sandy edges, and several are private ways maintained by the abutters. We check the approach before we commit, and on the tightest streets we will recommend a 10-yard container swapped twice rather than a 20 that cannot get in.
How do I keep the dumpster off my leach field?
Locate the system before delivery day. Cotuit lots are small and wooded, and on a lot of them the flattest open ground is precisely where the leach field sits.
